CropCow rice straw processing workshops

In mid-September, 2019, the CropCow team participated in rice straw processing workshops in Sumbawa and KalSel to provide farmers with further information on the benefits of rice straw ammoniation.

Field Officer Ms Fitriyani Susanti attended a Dinas-hosted feed processing technology workshop in Adu village, Dompu, Sumbawa. This event included presentations as well as a practical demonstration of the ammoniation process.

KalSel Field Officer Ms Ridhona Edriantina reported on similar events hosted by CropCow partners BPTP-KalSel and ULM, and held in Pulau Sari village with the Budidaya farmer group, and in Kuringkit village with the Bunga Maswar farmer group.

Dr Ika Sumantri from ULM gave a presentation at the Pulau Sari workshop on the ammoniation process and its benefits. This was followed by a practical demonstration which included 16 students from the Faculty of Agriculture, ULM as participants.

Ridhona noted the advantages of ammoniation from the KalSel events, and summarised these as follows:

  • overcoming difficulties in feeding cattle during the dry season;

  • fermentation is relatively easy to complete, requiring no special equipment and easily-accessible urea; and

  • utilising urea in the process improves the nutrient value of the rice straw, and the process also makes it easier for cattle to digest the straw.

Future workshops will focus on using corn waste by-product in a similar way.
