CommCare training for IndoBeef Field Officers

Objectives and activities

The training sought to provide the Field Officers and their supervisors with the ability to independently complete or explain a range of concepts related to the CommCare application, and to digital data collection:

  • Relevant skills in using a tablet device, including CommCare app installation and maximising device battery life.

  • Navigating the custom IndoBeef CommCare application.

  • Identifying the different types of questions possible within CommCare, as well as relevant error messages.

  • Methods for logging interactions in the field, depending on the purpose of the interaction and the type of information collected.

  • The importance of collecting information to manage IndoBeef contacts.

  • Using CommCare to submit relevant stories for IndoBeef communications activity.

  • Troubleshooting protocol.

Hands-on activities, digital games and role-play were incorporated into the training activities for application practice. After each demonstration, smaller activity groups applied the learnings to an allocated scenario, for example with one group member role-playing as the interviewer, and another as a smallholder farmer. One person was selected from each activity group to present the “solution” to their scenario to all participants. This approach helped to ensure that trainees paid close attention during role play sessions, and maximised the benefit of the learning activities.

The broad objective of the training was to equip IndoBeef Field Officers and their supervisors with the knowledge and skills to collect research and administrative data using a custom IndoBeef CommCare application.

Participant performance

According to Oikoi’s Nicole Eichorn, the trainee group demonstrated a genuine aptitude for mobile data collection, asking insightful questions throughout both days and providing useful suggestions when discussing potential changes to the application. Practical competency was assessed based on individual demonstrations to the group.

Participants enjoyed these activities and the nominated presenters always approached the front with high levels of enthusiasm and involvement.

Given the intense nature of the training activities over two days, trainees have been encouraged to keep practicing with the application immediately after the training was completed.

Further training is envisaged for the Field Officers to ensure their continued competence in the CommCare application, and maximise their understanding of the various surveys that are being finalised and included in the system.

The IndoBeef team is grateful for the support of the Oikoi team in developing the training materials and delivering the training activities, for their hard work in developing the customised IndoBeef CommCare application, and for their ongoing work in populating the application with surveys in areas such as gender, socio-economics and animal production.
